Too many years ago (38 to be exact), Harold Burson informed me that I had been identified as one of two rising stars in the BM/Chicago office. It meant the world to me to receive such high praise from someone I held in the highest esteem.
“I’m not creative” is one of the biggest lies I’ve ever heard. This far too common phrase is often announced by individuals who restrain themselves from unleashing their true imaginative talents. It’s not their fault that they believe they lack creativity, but more so the fault of a culture that influences people to constantly weigh their own abilities against others.
Work-life-balance is a myth. Sometimes the scale tips toward your home and family, and sometimes it will tip toward work and employees. Rarely do both sit side by side. I’ve accepted that’s not a negative thing. My top priorities right now are learning to be a better parent and learning to be a better creative director.
It is incredibly important to look back and thank the people who have helped you throughout your career. No one does it alone. There are countless managers, co-workers, peers, vendors, clients, family members and friends who have given you opportunities to move your career forward.
“Never use drop shadows.” If this sounds familiar, you’re probably a designer; if it doesn’t, take note. This rule of thumb can be confusing and misleading because there are occasional times that it seems more acceptable than others.
The workplace experience has changed drastically over the years – due to technology, different generations, new markets and audiences – and that’s just to name a few. Technology has proven to make jobs one hundred times, if not one thousand times, better than twenty years ago.

Our clients often say, “we definitely want more video.” We know, we know. Video is the preferred content for internet users basically everywhere, and that the need for it continues to rise (more than half of consumers want more video).
Whether you’ve been at your job for five years, one year or one month, it’s good to ground yourself and remember where you started. As the newest hire here at Sweeney and in the agency field in general, I have already learned the very basics of agency life.
