There is a great scene from the 4th episode of the 7th season of Mad Men. Peggy has just told Don Draper and John Mathis that she will need then to supply 25 taglines each for the Burger Chef pitch. John naturally submits, but Don simply recoils: "what's the strategy?" Don asks, brows furled in absolute dismay.

You're about to launch a new product that you hope (maybe even expect) can become your defining moment; it has the potential to be the campaign everyone looks back on as the turning point in your career. I've seen it a hundred times over the past 30 years.

Yesterday, we read this NY Times article - Biggest Advertisers Are Sending Their Dollars to Digital - and it sparked some debate in the office. I highly respect the NY Times and its journalistic standards, but this article wreaks of inconsistencies and lack of clarity - and I'm not sure that's to fault the writer.

Your tweets just got a little louder. Earlier this month, Twitter announced a partnership with Google, granting the search engine giant full access to user’s tweets. Starting in June 2015, tweets will appear in Google search results real-time. With an average of 6,000 tweets posted per second, Google will have access to an enormous amount of data.

In the marketing business it's easy to get hyper-focused on the big clients, the big media, big campaigns, big projects, big agencies, big celebrities. In a way, it's natural. But I am reminded daily that it is almost always the little things that make the difference between good and great (with all due respect to Jim Collins).

Most trade shows offer an excellent opportunity to meet with media. Media are at the show looking for the hottest products and trends, and of course you are highlighting your latest products and possibly featuring your leading experts. However, especially at large trade shows, getting media’s attention can be challenging.

Steve Jobs celebrated his 60th birthday earlier this week; at least I assume he did. It's hard to know for sure, since he's been gone for three-and-a-half years now (10-5-11). But I hope he did. I must say that for me, the world is a slightly sadder place without Steve in it.
