Expect Surprises Around Every Corner at the International Home & Housewares Show

I was one of the more than 60,000 attendees at the International Home and Housewares show earlier this week.  With a show featuring about 2,000 companies from around the globe, you are sure to find some new and innovative products.  Here are just a few that caught my eye.

The Wynn Gets a 2nd Chance

Last year I went to Vegas for a girls trip and we stayed at the Wynn.  Our experience was absolutely terrible, from maintenance issues, to bad food and poor service.  You can read all the details here: http://consumergoods.wordpress.com/2009/02/24/the-wynn-not-all-it-is-cracked-up-to-be/ After we got back last year, I immediately went to work writing and sending the Wynn a letter about our experience.  Within a few days, I received a call back from guest services, and the Wynn decided to comp our rooms.

For All You Red Winos

As a self-proclaimed wino, I love anything and everything to do with wine.  This past Christmas my in-laws gave me this great wine tool that I just have to rave about – the Rabbit Aerating Pourer by Metrokane.  You attach the “Rabbit” to your freshly opened red wine bottle, and it aerates the wine as you pour it.  It doesn’t require a decanter and definitely improves the taste of the wine.  It takes the edge off a newly opened bottle of red wine.  It is also very easy to clean!

Kmart Ads Land in Glamour Magazine

I was flipping through the March issue of Glamour earlier this week and was completely shocked to see a series of ads for Kmart’s fashion line.  We have all grown accustom to and accepted Target in the fashion industry.  Their unique hook is landing big designer names such as Jean Paul Gaultie, but Kmart?

Good Housekeeping’s 2nd Annual VIP Awards

Last year Good Housekeeping Research Institute began a VIP (Very Innovative Products) Award, which identifies the top consumer products that help solve problems, perform well and are innovative. This year, more than 1,650 products were evaluated and Good Housekeeping selected 10 “winners” that are featured in the February issue.  Here are five of my favorites!

What Happened to Bikes, Roller Skates & Barbie Dolls?

Apparently the toy industry has come along way since bikes, roller skates and Barbie dolls with its first app-enabled toy.  This Sunday Wild Plant Entertainment will be introducing the Spy Video Trakr, a remote controlled robot that features a night vision video camera, speakers, a microphone and a route-mapping feature, at the American International Toy Fair.

The Pumie: A Miracle Product

Just yesterday, my co-workers and I were discussing spring cleaning and if there are any real miracle products out there that save time.  My co-workers laughed at me when I mentioned The Pumie – a pumice stone for your toilet bowl.  One day I was having a hard time getting the rings to come off the inside of our toilets.  I was scrubbing and scrubbing.  Then I remembered one of our clients – The Housekeeping Channel – had recommended the Pumie to a media outlet, and I thought I would give it a shot.  Luckily, my local grocery store carried the Pumie, but it was never something I would have found on my own.

When to Buy Organic Produce

Besides my own garden, I don’t purchase organic produce because I’m never sure what organic produce is worth the increased cost (I’m a pretty frugal shopper).  I have read many articles about this topic, including one article that said if the produce has a thick skin then it is lower in pesticide residue.  However, that doesn’t seem to be 100% accurate.

Laundry Detergent Gets a Makeover

From powder to liquid, concentrated liquid, sheets and packets, laundry detergent continues to evolve. The focus on sustainability is what seems to be driving this evolution and likely Walmart is behind most of this. And while the benefit of sustainability alone is not enough for the majority of consumers to make the switch, not having to lug or store big old jugs will.
