Note to Government Marketers: Get Your SH&T Together

If the ground beneath your feet feels unstable and the wind beneath your wings seems to have died down, welcome to the new world.

You know that old saying: When the going gets tough, the tough get going? I think that’s wrong, because if you are not already going, then you are all but gone. However, if you’ve been going, then simply maintain your momentum and remember that eventually everything will level out.

It may not be the same. It may be worse, or it may be better, but it will eventually be settled. And then, more than ever, you will need your Strategic Humans & Technologies (SH&T) working together to achieve your most critical goals:

  1. Solidify your branding
  2. Build market awareness
  3. Engage with stakeholders
  4. Educate the marketplace
  5. Generate leads
  6. Add growth to your bottom line

Sound strategies implemented, analyzed, assessed, calibrated and relaunched by smart employees (humans) supported by smart technology (Software, AI, IoT) are your ticket to regaining control in a topsy-turvy world.

You can choose to scare yourself into submission listening to newscasts and podcasts, fearful that the end is near and that your job may soon be taken by advanced technologies – or worse your job will just be eliminated. Or you can just forge ahead.

Warren Buffett, the Oracle of Omaha and Soothsayer of Sustainability once said: “Your brand power is the strongest possible determinant of your business health.” In other words, investing in brand equity is more effective than chasing short-term sales tactics and price cuts, especially during economic downturns.

So, just keep doing everything that you’ve been doing. Unless you have not been doing the right things all along, in which case, get your SH&T together and start marketing smart.
