Want to give social media marketing a chance, but feel like you don’t have the time? The truth is there are a bazillion social media platforms out there… okay, that may be an exaggeration… but there are a lot. So, it is safe to say that you can (and must) be selective.
First and foremost, keep in mind that if social media is overwhelming for you, it is probably overwhelming for users too. According to a study, on average, those who use social media use just 2 accounts actively. Just like all other marketing strategies, it is important to research where your audience is and focus on those channels. If you spread your company and message too thin, you run the risk of wasting dollars, convoluting your messaging and ultimately, you could end up just talking to yourself!
So, here’s the test:
1. How many social media platforms can you name? If you only named one or two, give me a call. We need to catch you up!
2. How much time per week can you devote to company social media sites? In general, this means researching platforms, developing a social media strategy (yes, strategy is necessary), developing content, posting content and maintaining the sites. Be realistic with yourself. For many companies, a dedicated agency, social media supervisor or even a social department is imperative. Smaller companies often find social media becomes a role of the marketing department.
3. How much time do you think people spend on social media? Per hour? Per week? A recent study from Experian shows that for every hour a U.S. citizen spends online, 16 minutes of that hour is spent perusing social networking sites.
4. How does social media fit into your marketing mix? How can social media help support the other marketing strategies the company deploys, and how can you leverage it?
I could go on and on with a list of questions, but the overarching answer to the bigger question is YES, you do have time for social media. And, you should make time. It is one of the fastest growing marketing opportunities today. There are many ways, both small and large, that can help you make an impact in the social media marketplace.
